IVF or IUI: which treatment is right for you?

October 3, 2026

IUI and IVF are two of the most common fertility treatments. They work in different ways, take different amounts of time and suit different situations. Here’s a plain-language guide to help you understand which one your doctor may suggest first.

How IUI works

In intrauterine insemination (IUI), your partner’s sperm is washed in the lab to select the most active sperm. Around the time you ovulate, the sperm are placed directly into your uterus through a thin, soft tube. Fertilisation then happens naturally inside your body.

IUI is quick, needs no anaesthesia, and you can go back to your normal day straight afterwards.

How IVF works

In in vitro fertilisation (IVF), medicines help your ovaries develop several eggs. The eggs are collected under sedation and fertilised with sperm in the lab. After a few days, the healthiest embryo is placed in your uterus.

When IUI is usually suggested

IUI needs at least one open fallopian tube, so your doctor will check this first.

The bottom line

There is no single right answer for everyone. Your age, your test results and how long you’ve been trying all matter. A fertility assessment for both partners is the best way to find the treatment that gives you the best chance.
