Fertility Preservation

Egg & embryo freezing: more time, more options

Freezing eggs or embryos lets you preserve your fertility for the future, whether for medical reasons, personal plans, or to keep extra embryos from an IVF cycle. We use vitrification, a fast-freezing method that protects them well.

What is fertility preservation?

Keeping your options open for later

Eggs or embryos are frozen very quickly using vitrification and stored at extremely low temperatures. When you’re ready, they are thawed: eggs are fertilised with ICSI, and embryos are transferred in a frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycle.

  • Egg freezing for women who want to delay pregnancy
  • Embryo freezing for couples, including extras from IVF
  • Storage in line with Indian ART regulations
  • Clear guidance on when to use your frozen eggs or embryos

Who it’s for

Who considers freezing

Freezing can help in many situations. Your doctor will discuss whether it suits you.

Before medical treatment

Before cancer treatment or surgery that could affect fertility.

Planning for later

Women who want to delay pregnancy for personal or career reasons.

Extra IVF embryos

Couples with good-quality embryos left after an IVF transfer.

Declining ovarian reserve

Women with a low or falling AMH who want to act early.

Endometriosis

When the condition may affect the ovaries over time.

Planned frozen transfer

When a fresh transfer isn’t advisable in the current cycle.

The freezing process

What happens, step by step

Egg freezing follows the first half of an IVF cycle. Embryo freezing continues through fertilisation.

About 2–3 weeksfrom the start of injections to your eggs or embryos being frozen
  1. 1

    Consultation & tests

    1–2 visits

An AMH blood test and ovarian scan show how many eggs you’re likely to have.

  2. 2

    Ovarian stimulation

    About 8–12 days

Daily hormone injections help several eggs mature, with regular monitoring scans.

  3. 3

    Egg collection

    15–30 minutes

Eggs are collected under sedation with a fine, ultrasound-guided needle.

  4. 4

    Fertilisation (embryos only)

    3–5 days

For embryo freezing, eggs are fertilised and grown in the lab before freezing.

  5. 5

    Vitrification & storage

    Same day

Mature eggs or good-quality embryos are rapidly frozen and stored securely.

  6. 6

    Using them later

    When you’re ready

Eggs are thawed and fertilised with ICSI. Embryos are thawed and transferred in an FET cycle.

Success factors

What affects future success

Freezing preserves your eggs as they are today. These factors shape your chances later.

01

Age at freezing

Eggs frozen at a younger age generally give better chances.

02

Number of eggs

More eggs frozen means more chances later. Some women need more than one cycle.

03

Egg or embryo quality

Only mature eggs and good-quality embryos are frozen.

04

Survival after thawing

Most vitrified eggs and embryos survive thawing, but not all.

05

Uterine health later

A healthy uterus is needed when the time comes to transfer.

06

Sperm quality later

For egg freezing, fertilisation depends on sperm quality at the time of use.

Our honest approach: Freezing improves your options, but it can’t guarantee a future pregnancy. Dr. Rekha will help you understand how many eggs may be needed for your age.

Cost

Clear costs, explained before you begin

Costs depend on the stimulation needed and how long you store. We’ll give you a written estimate after your consultation.

Freezing FAQs

Your freezing questions, answered

Still unsure? Ask us on WhatsApp

What is the best age to freeze eggs?
Generally, the younger the better. Eggs frozen before 35 tend to give better chances later. Your AMH test helps guide the decision.
How long can eggs or embryos be stored?
Storage is allowed for a set number of years under Indian ART regulations. We’ll explain the current rules and renewal process.
Is egg freezing painful?
The injections cause mild discomfort. Egg collection is done under sedation, and most women rest for a day afterwards.
Do frozen embryos work as well as fresh ones?
With vitrification, frozen embryo transfers often work as well as fresh ones. Your doctor will explain what applies to you.
Should I freeze eggs or embryos?
Embryo freezing needs sperm now; egg freezing doesn’t. Dr. Rekha will help you decide based on your situation.
Can I freeze eggs before cancer treatment?
Often, yes. Speak to us as early as possible so we can plan around your treatment.
