Intrauterine insemination (IUI) places specially prepared sperm directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation. It is simpler and less invasive than IVF, and for many couples it is the right place to start.
Your partner’s semen sample is washed and concentrated in our lab to select the most active sperm. Around the time you ovulate, the sperm are placed high in your uterus through a thin, soft tube, closer to where the egg is waiting.
IUI needs at least one open fallopian tube and reasonable sperm quality. Your doctor will check both first.
Slightly low sperm count or movement.
When tests look normal but pregnancy hasn’t happened.
Combined with medicines that help you ovulate, for example in PCOS.
When cervical mucus makes it hard for sperm to pass through.
When timed intercourse isn’t possible for any reason.
When treatment uses donor sperm or a frozen sample.
One IUI cycle follows your menstrual cycle. Your doctor will tell you exactly when to come in.
A semen analysis, hormone tests and a check that your fallopian tubes are open.
Scans track your egg as it grows. You may take mild medicines to help you ovulate.
An injection may be given to time ovulation precisely, usually 24–36 hours before IUI.
Your partner gives a sample, which is washed in our lab to select the healthiest, most active sperm.
The sperm are placed in the uterus through a thin tube. It feels similar to a routine smear test.
A blood or urine test shows the result. If it’s negative, we plan the next step together.
IUI works best in the right situation. These are the main things your doctor looks at.
Chances are higher in women under 35.
At least one tube must be open for the egg and sperm to meet.
Enough healthy, moving sperm are needed.
Regular ovulation, naturally or with medicines, is key.
IUI is often tried for a few cycles before moving on.
Weight, smoking and alcohol affect both partners.
