Before you start

Getting ready for your first visit

When to see a specialist

It’s a good time to book a consultation if:

  • You’re under 35 and have tried for a year
  • You’re 35 or older and have tried for six months
  • Your periods are irregular or very painful
  • You have PCOS, endometriosis or a known condition
  • You’ve had more than one miscarriage

What to bring

Bringing these helps the doctor understand your history quickly:

  • Previous test reports and scans
  • Records of any earlier fertility treatment
  • A list of medicines you both take
  • The date of your last period
  • Your partner, if possible, for the first visit
1

First consultation

About 45–60 minutes1 visit

You meet Dr. Rekha in private. She’ll ask about your health, periods, previous pregnancies and any treatment you’ve had, and she’ll answer your questions. It’s a conversation, not a commitment.

How you may feel

Nervous or hopeful, often both. Many couples say they feel relieved just to start.

Care tip

Write your questions down beforehand. Our checklist below can help.

2

Tests & diagnosis

1–2 weeks1–3 visits

Both partners are tested. For women this usually means hormone blood tests (such as AMH), an ultrasound scan of the uterus and ovaries, and sometimes a test to check the fallopian tubes. For men, a semen analysis.

How you may feel

Waiting for results can be hard. It’s normal to feel anxious.

Care tip

Some tests are timed to your cycle. Our team will tell you exactly which day to come in.

3

Your treatment plan

1 visitWritten cost estimate

Dr. Rekha explains your results and recommends the treatment that suits you. IVF isn’t always the first step. If it is, you’ll get a calendar for your cycle, a list of medicines and a written cost estimate before anything begins.

How you may feel

Clearer. Knowing the plan and the cost removes a lot of uncertainty.

Care tip

Take time to decide. You can come back with more questions before you start.

4

Ovarian stimulation & monitoring

About 8–12 days3–5 short visits

You take daily hormone injections that help your ovaries develop several eggs. Our nurses show you how, and many women give them at home. Regular scans and blood tests track how the eggs are growing and let us adjust your dose.

How you may feel

Some bloating, tiredness or mood swings are common. Tell us about anything that worries you.

Care tip

Set a phone reminder so injections happen at the same time each day.

5

Egg collection & fertilisation

15–30 minute procedureHome the same day

About 36 hours after a final “trigger” injection, the eggs are collected with a fine needle guided by ultrasound, under sedation. The same day, your partner gives a semen sample, and the eggs are fertilised in our lab, either with IVF or ICSI.

How you may feel

Drowsy afterwards, with mild cramping for a day or two.

Care tip

Bring someone to take you home, and plan to rest for the rest of the day.

6

Embryo transfer

3–5 days after collectionNo anaesthesia needed

Our embryologists watch the embryos develop and help choose the healthiest. It is placed in your uterus through a soft, thin tube. It takes a few minutes and feels much like a routine scan. Good-quality extra embryos can be frozen for later.

How you may feel

Emotional. Many couples describe this as the most hopeful moment.

Care tip

You can go back to light daily activities. Your doctor will tell you what to avoid.

7

The two-week wait & pregnancy test

About 2 weeksBlood test at the clinic

You continue any support medicines your doctor prescribes. About two weeks after the transfer, a blood test shows whether you’re pregnant. If it’s positive, we arrange your early scans. If it isn’t, we sit down with you to talk through what happened and the options ahead.

How you may feel

This is often the hardest part. Every twinge can feel like a sign.

Care tip

Avoid home pregnancy tests before your blood test. They can give misleading results.

You’re not alone

Support for the emotional side

IVF is as much an emotional journey as a medical one. We make room for both.

If a cycle doesn’t work

Not every cycle leads to a pregnancy, and that is not your fault. We’ll review what happened with you, explain what we learned, and talk honestly about next steps, whether that’s another cycle, a frozen embryo transfer or a different approach. You decide, in your own time.

FAQs

Common questions about the journey

How long does the whole IVF journey take?
From your first consultation to a pregnancy test usually takes about two to three months. The treatment cycle itself, from starting injections to the test, is about four to six weeks.
Do I need to stay near the clinic during treatment?
No. Most visits are short, and with four centres you can usually choose the one closest to you. Our team will tell you which steps happen at which centre.
Can my partner be with me?
Yes. Partners are welcome at consultations and scans, and they are needed on the day of egg collection to give a semen sample.
What if we need more than one cycle?
Many couples do. If you have frozen embryos, a later transfer is simpler, with no need for stimulation or egg collection. Your doctor will plan the next step with you.
Is everything kept confidential?
Yes. Your records and conversations stay private between you and your care team.
